In the wake of the federal monitor's report criticizing the handling of the Rikers Island jail complex, advocates have renewed calls for a federal takeover.

Some elected officials have come out against Commissioner Louis Molina, questioning his ability to handle the notorious facility.

The monitor report alleges the Department of Correction is failing to maintain transparency on deadly incidents, downplaying lethal use of force by officers and neglecting to provide emergency medical care to inmates.

Mayor Eric Adams defended the department and commissioner last week, questioning the monitor's intentions.
